We stayed as we were attending the 60s music festival and the location was great. The Arches Guest House is lovely, staff are friendly the room was lovely, clean and bright and the bed comfortable is an understatement I wanted to take it home. Breakfast was very nice with a good amount of options. Would 100% recommend.

Lovely lady.!!

No hassle Booking. concise information on entry. The most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The breakfast was superb, many things to choose from, piping hot, cooked to order. A must for anyone staying. My family and I wished we could have stayed longer, will book again.
Tips:A good pair of shoes, as the location is quite steep in places, especially if you intend to walk the 199 steps to the abbey.Loads of little snickle ways (small passages) to explore, go and have an adventure.

I feel that although the hotel is perfectly fine, clean, good food it is overrated having 4 stars. The accommodation is basic, but lacking some facilities that would warrant a 4 star rating.

Excellent. The room was clean, spacious and warm, and everything worked. There's the option of sleeping under a throw if it's too warm to sleep under a quilt, which was useful. The shower was powerful and hot. The breakfasts were plentiful and lovely, staff friendly and helpful. The self-check-in system worked well, and I found a free parking space fairly quickly. I've booked to go there again.
Tips:If you use a rechargeable toothbrush or shaver, you'll need to take a plug as there's no charging socket in the room, it wasn't a big deal. Parking is on street by a free scratchcard scheme, I parked in West Cliff car park for a couple of hours while I unloaded, got the scratchcard from the Arches, had a sleep and found a parking spot. That worked well. It's about 3 minutes walk from the Pavilion and the beach, easy to get into town, although Whitby's quite hilly. I thoroughly recommend the Arches.

Lovely guest house, lovely people, great location. Room very clean and comfortable, good breakfast. Would definitely stay again.
Tips:Whitby is beautiful, great for wandering around - we enjoyed walking on the beach, round the harbour and through the town; we also got a bus to Robin Hood’s Bay (also really lovely) and walked back along the coast. The Abbey is stunning. We ate and drank very well at The Granby and The Black Horse. We also had delicious beer & gin & tonic at the Arch & Abbey.

Friendly people - nice boarding house. Enjoyed staying for the weekend. Would definitely stay again! Thanks!
Tips:Location is good - a short (little hilly!) stroll into the centre of the town. Parking was fine, a little busy on a Saturday arrival (especially as it wasn't summer) but parked up a five minute walk away and moved the car closer when the day trippers had departed. Plenty of places to eat and pubs in the town. If you have mobility issues a walk up to the abbey would prove difficult but I believe the town tour bus drives up there? A nice place to visit overall but can be on the busy side even on non-summer weekends

Love the self check-in and out system as there’s no awkwardness around arrival time and allows flexibility. Only thing missing is a communal area to relax but that’s a minor quibble.

Absolutely beautiful guesthouse, fabulous location, literally 10 min walk to the centre. And the lovely surprise was the view of st Mary’s church and the abbey as we turn right to walk into town. Excellent location, very friendly and helpful owners (I get lost very easily) and clean and modern room, yet still they maintain the era the property was built in.
Tips:Definitely visit everything possible, don’t waste anytime. Little angel pub is excellent for entertainment, locals are so friendly and kind. And food is lovely in The Grandby pub! Also make sure you have some cash, as well as cards. As some places do still prefer cash only.

We loved our stay at Archers Guest House. The owners were very friendly and engaging at breakfast. We had the attic room on the 3rd floor which was a lot of steps, however the beams added to the charm of the room.

Perfect location. Traditional guest house. Efficient check in service. We received a text wit the door entry code a few days before, then found our keys inside the hallway. Parking pass included. Lovely breakfast - although you do have to be quite organised and decide what you want to eat the day before.
Tips:Parking is included but is tricky so you may have to park a few streets away. We enjoyed the food and atmosphere at the Abbey Wharf. We took the bus to Robin Hoods Bay and walked back to Whitby along the Cleveland way. It is 6.5 miles and a moderate walk with some steps and slopes, but amazing views.

Lovely room, friendly staff and good food. Also a nice location only a few minutes from the town centre, the harbour and the beach. We had a very nice stay.
Tips:Obvious places to visit are the Abbey and the beach. We particularly liked the part of the town over the bridge below the Abbey. Lots of little shops and cobbled streets. Robin Hood's Bay, which is only a 15 minute bus trip away is well worth a visit. For food and drink, we liked Sherlock's and the Angel has reasonably priced decent quality meals.

27th March 2024:
We found the guest house to be pretty much as we expected and it suited our needs and budget. It is run on minimal management basis, that is to say that nobody cleans rooms whilst you are there or changes towels etc, presumably this is just for short term, 2-3 night stays, however you can request towels etc if required. There was one thing we found unusual and unacceptable though! and that was the seating arrangements at breakfast whereby 2 rooms (separate guests) are placed next to each other at the tables. For people arriving in groups of 4 who know each other this is fine but it is not acceptable for complete strangers to be sat together without being asked first. We have not come across this on our previous trips to Whitby but will check in future. The breakfast itself was good, wholesome with a good choice. Other than the unaccpetable seating at breakfast we would recommend this guest house to friends.
Tips:Great area to choose if you want to be central for harbour, pubs with food and live music and also as a base for walking.
Would Recommend: Yes
Owner Response:Really sorry that we disappointed you on this occasion. If all rooms arrive for breakfast at the same time, the dining room can feel reasonably compact. Having said that, we never knowingly place separate bookings on the same table. I can only apologise. I assume we made a mistake, and thought you were all together. As a tip for all guests, we are not infallible, and a quiet word with us at the time, will sort 99% of problems out. All the best Dave

22nd November 2023:
Hi, really enjoyed our stay at The Arches, excellent communication prior to our arrival with a full explanation of self check in, which was simple and quick. We stayed in room 11, which was clean, warm and had a very comfortable bed along with tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast was superb with a wide range of options all well presented. Only a short walk into the centre of Whitby so ideal location. Only very slight criticism is that both being over 70 the number of stairs to our room was quite daunting, along with the right hand side of the bed was very difficult to access due to the wooden supporting structure to the roof. But overall an excellent place to stay and very sensibly priced.

It would be nice to have more variety on the breakfast menu, perhaps boiled or poached eggs, kippers, separate flavoured yoghurts, grapefruit.
Tips:Definitely visit The Magpie restsurant, and Robin Hood Bay.

Owner Response:Thanks for your review. We are happy to do poached, scrambled, boiled and fried eggs - just ask! I've lost count of the amount of flavoured yogurt, half eaten Kippers, and grapefruit that I've thrown away over the last 13 years. We now concentrate on a good range of cereal, fresh fruit salad, daily specials, vegetarian full English, traditional full English, as well as many other options. This helps us provide for the vast majority of guests, at a reasonable price.

The perfect place to stay for anyone visiting Whitby. The location is ideal, being a short walk into the town centre, but also in a quiet area surrounded by beautiful Georgian style buildings. The owner and staff were amazing and couldn’t do enough to help. Breakfast was delicious and the self check in system worked a treat. We’d stay again in a heartbeat!.
Tips:There are no dedicated parking spaces, so I’d recommend finding a space first once you arrive near the Arches. The roads are nice and wide so you should find one without too much trouble. Parking is free for the duration of your stay using a parking token. You must visit the Abbey for the views and photo opportunities, we’d also recommend any of the boat trips and the bus tour. Whitby is beautiful with more restaurants, cafes, pubs and fish n chip shops than I’ve ever seen in one place. We loved it!

29th August 2023:
Unexpectedly, at short notice I found accommodation at the Arches Guesthouse during festival week. Six nights turned into eight nights. It felt very much like home from home, with one pleasant exception, the tastiest breakfast ever being cooked for me every morning. Ordering from a varied selection of items the day before (including a daily special) was a really good idea, as it did not waste anyone’s time in the morning, nor did it waste any food as it is known in advance what is needed. On entering the breakfast room, the most gorgeous, colourful looking fresh fruit salad was waiting at the table (by room number). The number of different fruits was incredible and only possible by the way it was prepared, cut up a perfect size! There is nothing not to like about how the accommodation is managed. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, although no-one is seen after breakfast time, there is an emergency telephone number to make it is easy to get in touch during the day, should it be necessary. I certainly will be back again.
Tips:There is so much to see and do in Whitby, from the beach to St. Mary’s Church/the Abbey, which can be clearly seen from the Arches across the valley. It is accessible with a pleasant walk down to the River Esk and across the bridge. The 199 steps were not as daunting as I imagined, considering my age and need for a walking stick and was well worth it for the fantastic views, even though, because I was involved with the festival, I was too late to view the Church and the Abbey.

Hotel was fantastic. Staff were friendly & helpful. The room was very clean, spacious & tastefully decorated. Shower & bathroom was spacious too. Could have done with toilet roll holder & hooks for hanging towels & clothes. Bedroom & bathroom door were stiff so had to be banged closed. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, we were very comfortable. Could have done with a larger T.V but it encouraged us not to watch it!! Breakfasts were delicious & large portions of everything. We requested poached eggs on our last morning which Dave made for us. Nothing was any bother. Got clean towels, bin emptied & tea & coffee replenished when required. Definitely 10/10.
Tips:Plenty to do & see & all in walking distance. Lots of nice restaurants, ice cream & souvenir shops. We did the Dracula experience, Whitby abbey, St Mary’s church, amusment arcades & played bowling. Great experiences. We also went to the park & museum which both were beautiful. There was also a children's play area within it. There was a beautiful lily pond. Well worth a visit. My little boy fished for crabs & enjoyed putting at west cliff.

22nd July 2022:
Well, where do I start. From the outside the house looks lovely, it appeared clean when walking in but such a disappointment when we reached our room. The dados and skirting had not seen a duster in quite sometime, the windowsill and top of bottom sash window was covered in flies and bugs! The shower was not clean by a long shot, and changed temperature of it's own accord and the sink hot water tap did not run above tepid unless run for about 5 minutes. The door on the shower took some mastering to close also, or you ended up with a wet floor, no bath mat either so had to use the 1 hand towel in the bathroom. Advert advised free WiFi, but when we initially couldn't find it on anything, we emailed the owner but received nothing back. On walking down the stairs the following day it was written on a piece of paper on the wall at the bottom of the stairs along with a phone number to call. I would recommend this information be left in all rooms instead if in such an obscure place. The TV was stated as modern which it was but with our eyesight and such a small TV it was difficult to see from the only viewing place, the bed. The bed was very comfy though and clean. Although it did state they were adhering to covid still, we had no interaction with a human being in our 2 day stay. Very impersonal I believe. Parking was 3 streets away, and we were lucky to find that, not that it bothered us, but for anyone less able this might be a problem. Also, check which rooms are provided with breakfast as not all are?? Which we didn't realise until after booking. However, the singing kettle a short walk away does a banging full English for £6.

Bedroom good but needs a little updating and the shower needed to be cleaner as there was patches of black mould. Having said that, it didn't bother us too much but other guest's might. Breakfast was very good and prompt. I would definitely stay here again. I think it would be a good idea to have leaflets for things to do, see and recommendations for where to eat. Provide numbers for local taxis and takeaways etc.
Tips:Bit of a walk uphill from harbour. We found all restaurants stop serving food at 8pm. We were lucky to get served at local chip shop just after 8pm but we could only get what was left over. We ended up with just chips.

The only comment I would add is for the benefit of other people rather than myself as it didn't do anything to detract my own stay, but the TV antenna didn't work in my room which meant I couldn't watch anything during my time there, which I appreciate for dsome might cause irritation. Overall though, the Arches Guest House was a really pleasant place to stay and great value for what you got considering the very reasonable price I paid. The staff were really helpful and friendly, the food at breakfast was great and the bedroom I had (with en suite bathroom) was perfect for what I needed.
Tips:I would recommend that you visited Whitby Abbey and the Old Town for sure, but I would also take the time to have a meal at one of the great fish and chip restaurants that are in the town. there are so many other places and things to see in the town, but it's also worth going to Staithes, Runswick Bay, Sandlands and Robin Hood's Bay too as all are within a 20 minute drive of Whitby in either direction. On top of this, any of the villages in the Yorkshire Moors are well worth a visit, particularly Goathland and several others. There's that much to do locally which suits all tastes, so you will never ever be bored!

We have always found Whitby to be a welcoming place with something for everyone. Recommend visit to abbey and a trip out on one of the boats to see the sea life though that's not always guaranteed. Lots of great restaurants to eat in and takeaways if eating on the hoof is your scene.

Owner Response:I'm sorry for any misunderstanding you may have with booking.com. I've checked the booking, and you booked room only. If this had been raised with myself, or any of the staff on site, or even via mobile (which is displayed all over the B&B) we would have positively resolved the issue (despite the fault being of your own making). To raise this after the fact, when we are unable to do anything about it, is frankly ridiculous.

Also a special mention to Adrian / Billy who was so helpful when we arrived , explaining the parking permit etc . Would definitely return .

Very enjoyable two night stay. We were in the double attic room which was a good size, very airy and light. Only issue was we struggled to reach to close the blinds, but we had fun trying. A nice chair would have been a good addition instead of sitting on the bed all the time. Tea and coffee facilities were good. Happy to arrive to a car parking Permit and managed to get a space right outside the property.

Staying at the Archers was very nice it was an easy self service check in on arrival, no hassle with anything. We had booked a family room as that was the only room available to us but having the extra space was an added bonus for the two of us. To sum things up it was nice & very clean, comfy beds and nice big pillows, not noisy and in a pretty good location as well. We didn't book breakfast at first when booking but I did make contact with Dave and got it arranged before arriving, I can only say well worth it absolutely lovely. It was our first time staying here and on returning to Whitby again I would most definitely not hesitate to book again with them.

This is our third stay but the first time we have stayed in one of the top-floor rooms. Space is tight and the stairs are incredibly steep so those who are not as mobile as others would struggle so please check with them when you book.

Staff very polite and informative. Great location. Breakfast grab bags very good wish all B&B can offer these in the future as an alternative if wanted. Parking a bit of a problem for all B&B’s in the area. We had a family room for 3 single adults. But for a family with small children could have benefited from: a bath, a larger tv to amuse kids in the evening or on a rainy day and definitely a small fridge to store milk and snacks. I would like there to be a manned check in 4.pm to 6.pm the same as 11.am to 12:00. I like to be welcomed by a person when i arrive somewhere and shown to my room. Its nice to have the human touch. I would like all rooms to be Bed and Breakfast board and not just room only. The guest house is very welcoming clean and tidy. I felt really safe in my room at night and the location is excellent near to all the attractions Whitby has to offer. My room 1 ground floor was huge, had a great TV, comfy double bed that was very comfortable. I loved having my own En suite its a great size and the shower was excellent and got constant hot water. The tea and coffee in the room and biscuits were lovely thing to have. It was lovely and quiet and i felt safe walking to the Guest House at night felt i was in a safe area.
Tips:I would highly recommend you walk along the promenade and go visit the Whale bone arch and go to the viewing gallery near the whale bones for a great view of beach, the abbey and the fisherman's cottages. My second recommendation walk u the 199 steps to the top to visit the abbey and get full panoramic views of Whitby. The swig bridge is a must see attraction in Whitby as well as the replica ship HMS Discovery that took Captain cook on his voyages. Visit the town center and go to see Captain James cooks cottage. Fantastic in every way. Friendly owner, and staff. We stayed in the family room which was immaculate, and spacious. The breakfast was second to none, fresh fruit, cereals, full English wish was cooked to perfection, and not forgetting the delicious lemon cake, wow. Would highly recommend.
Tips:A must is a visit to Pannett Park and Museum, a great day out, and lovely tearoom. The Magpie Cafe is always on our list when visiting Whitby. Can get very busy, so booking is advisable.

Excellent accommodation with excellent service provided. Facilities modern and spotlessly clean. Would be my first choice when going back to Whitby. Excellent breakfast provided with choice of cereals, fresh fruit followed by a full English if required or various other cooked dishes.
Tips:Plenty to see and do. Loads of local craft shops to visit as well as the usual seaside type shops. Numerous good places to eat out in an evening. The Abbey is well worth a visit or there are plenty of places to see within 10-15 miles or you can get the steam train from Whitby to Pickering.

I appreciated getting the text with clear check in instructions. They were easy to follow. I also liked the option on the breakfast order of saying what we didn’t want from the full breakfast, that must save on waste. The breakfast fruit salad was very fresh and appetising.
Tips:Very well situated for exploring Whitby. After the huge ‘small full breakfast’ we didn’t need lunch but we did enjoy a coffee or tea and a delicious slice of cake in Becketts on Skinner Street and Sherlock’s on Flowergate in the afternoon. If you hear the bell ringing at the small bridge in the centre of Whitby, it’s worth going to watch both halves of the bridge turn to let taller boats through. This mainly happens at high tide.

Lovely presented building, stood out in the street as the nicest looking guesthouse. Smooth self check-in with easy to follow parking permit instructions and breakfast choice system - made our arrival a pleasure and no fuss at all. Room was lovely, clean and spacious, nice homely touches, big comfy bed with lots of pillows. Bathroom really clean and again, nice touches with the toiletries and lots of thick towels. Breakfast was up there with the best we have had, full English means full English at The Arches with bacon, sausage, mushrooms, black pudding, egg, tomato, beans and a hash brown - The full selection! Really nice. Coffee was strong and just what we needed. Lovely homemade lemon drizzle cake to top it all off!!! Amazing food and great, attentive service!!! The Arches is in a good location, only minutes from the town centre, pier and beach. Everything was top notch which helped to make our short stay in Whitby an absolute pleasure. We will be back and will recommend to others. Thanks.
Tips:If you are hoping to eat in one/some of the nicer restaurants, book early...we chanced it and couldn't get a table anywhere. Ended up at a lovely Italian in Grape Lane called Moutreys but couldn't get a table till 9pm - luckily the food was worth the wait. If you like fine micro brewery ales try The Quirky Den just down the street from Moutreys...nice little place, good beer and the owners are really friendly.

A truly delightful stay, staff were very friendly and made our visit and absolute pleasure. The room was very tastefully decorated, and the guest house is perfectly situated for access to all you want and or need. Breakfast was superb and set us up for the day, a full English , a challenge but mastered, the buffet plentiful and varied, without shadow of a doubt fantastic..We had a wonderful weekend, thank you very very much, we will be back !!
Tips:We are seasoned Whitby visitors, every year . Our favourite fish and chip restaurant, cos it has to be done is Trenchers. We just love to mooch about the old side up to the church and abbey and absorb the oldie world atmosphere, cobbled streets , quaint little yards, very old buildings. We do have family from hundreds of years ago born here so it is a token gesture .Robin Hoods Bay only a few miles away, to be seen, like wise Staithes, Runswick Bay, picturesque little bays. You can't go wrong.

Overall, a very pleasant stay. Would definitely consider staying at The Arches again. The reasons for the non-5 ratings are minor: dust on bedside lampshades (otherwise spotless), no alarm clock, no bottled water. Had we mentioned the lack of a clock (the welcome pack says there is one in every room) I'm sure one would have been provided, but we're British and the British don't like to complain...

Hi there, just confirming we enjoyed are trip to whitby it’s some where we visit 4 or 5 times a year and we love the place . Unfortunately on this occasion it was so cold there was snow on the ground and our room no2 was freezing i woke up several times through the night , the heating did come on eventually at about 730 am but it was still too cold . I got up in the middle of the night but there was no extra bedding to help in the wardrobe. The mattress wasn’t fab either on the left hand side there was a massive delve . I must say the welcome was great and the breakfast was gorgeous the bathroom was very clean .Having read all the fab reviews I expected warmth and cosy I was just very disappointed i couldn’t get to sleep in such a cold room .
Tips:We went in our usual haunts but we enjoyed the white horse and griffin gin bar and the fish pie at the Abbey wharf was out if this world x

Lovely little B&B with very friendly staff, who cannot do enough for you. Breakfast is always generous and the ladies who work here are very helpful and friendly. We stayed in a family room this time and it was very spacious and cleaned daily. The room has basic facilities, but we feel this is all you need when staying in Whitby. The room was always lovely and warm when returning to the hotel on an evening. This was our second stay here and we will continue to book The Arches Guest House when we visit Whitby.
Tips:Only a few minutes walk to the centre of Whitby, with lots of little shops to browse in. Dog friendly places and suitable for all ages. Plenty of little pubs to eat and drink in and lots of scenic places close by to walk around. A takeaway on the way back up to the hotel "bits and pizzas" which serves pizzas/burgers/kebabs until late in the evening, when other food places have closed.

This B&B is clearly very well run. The staff were very friendly. The location is good, only being a short walk into the centre. The room was clean. Breakfast of a good quality (and plenty of it) and served efficiently. The only very slight negative for us was the breakfast time of 8-9, which made getting up on a weekend less leisurely with two ladies showering, drying hair etc before breakfast. Upto 9.30 would perhaps be better but understand the need to get things done efficiently. That said it would not prevent us from staying again and it is our intention to come back next time we visit Whitby. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Tips:We had our evening meals in the Moon and Sixpence and The Marine during our stay and would recommend both. Good quality restaurants.

What a fantastic find! We landed around 4pm to the smell of baking, the owner (?) Was full of welcome despite our interrupting her, she showed us to our room which was perfect, clean, light and the beds were lovely and comfortable. She showed us a map of the town and pointed out some places she thought we would like and left us too it. Breakfast the following mirning was delicious.. exactly what we needed having followed advice on the 2 for 1 cocktails in town!! The location was perfect and though we were probably a bit late back and not as quiet with sober hindsight as we though we were being... if they would have us back we'd return in a heartbeat next time ☺ Definitely recommend this spot for a stay!

Great location up on the West Cliff, with easy access to beach and town. Fabulous freshly cooked breakfast. Very friendly and helpful host. Lovely bedrooms, however, a drawback for the single room is the fact that the shower and toilet are in a little closet opposite the room. Not great if need the bathroom during the night!! Also VERY tight on space. Would still recommend this guest house though.

Lovely clean guest house with friendly owner and staff. Breakfast was great every morning (pre order form used). Attic family room was as described.
Tips:From the guesthouse it's a steady walk down onto the front. Lots to see and do, the Abbey, the pier, the shambles and shops. There's a huge park - Pannett Park which is great for kids and a five minute walk from Arches Guest House. There's a lido and crazy golf. Lots for everyone.

Service was good, rooms were clean. We were looked after brilliantly by Dave and the girls. Thanks very much. We will be seeing you again.

Could do with curtains (not just blinds) in room 2. The room was very light in the morning when you would typically expect blackout curtains to aid sleep.

Lovely place to stay. Spotlessly clean and fresh. Brilliant breakfast, wide choice of food. Everyone very nice and welcoming and helpful.
Tips:The change to the on road parking could be a bit tricky, but we were given a parking permit by The Arches which was thoughtful. The Duke of York pub has nice meals, and the Monks Haven café is good for a 'light bite,. The Abbey is always a good place to visit, although it can be a bit windy up on the top of the cliffs! Whitby is just a nice place to visit, with plenty of other places near by if you are staying a longer time.

Very friendly - great advice for local stuff to do/eat/drink - fantastic location for us with views of the priory from just outside the front door. Excellent breakfast - almost couldn't eat it all but still had room for the homemade banana cake!! We will use this place again next time we stay in Whitby.
Tips:Loads of eateries to choose from - some need to be booked in advance to get a seat though... Pubs galore... Loads for kids to do (amusements, fairground rides etc)

Flexible regarding our check in which was gone midnight. Dave and the team couldn't do enough - very friendly and no need to look anywhere else in Whitby.
Tips:Parking is difficult - even with the pass supplied by the hotel. However the pay and display does take debit cards which is very useful. Make time to fit in one of the many local restaurants - would be wise to book in advance.

Only caveat was size of bed and shower. Both would prevent our return. That is a personal comment view being larger than average, thus I would assume not a problem for the majority. Very good welcome and excellent, generous breakfast. WI-FI a real bonus.
