Sophie and Phill were the perfect hosts, the Belfry is a stunning guest house in an excellent location. Parking wasn't an issue and we were made to feel most welcome. We stayed in room no. 7 which was beautiful, newly refurbished with a sumptuous tub. We will be returning!

Fresh, modern decor finishes off an excellent b&b. The luxury suite on the top floor is spacious and comfortable, with a lovely shower room. The only quibbles would be the lack of a soap dish, and a chair or two in the bedroom. Phill and Sophie could not have been nicer, and bring a youthful enthusiasm to the business.

22nd May 2016:

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay with you. Great hosts. You made us feel very welcome and provided a home from home. Loved the use of your lounge and to have the facilities to make good coffee, store our wine and have a chat with friends.

Tips:

Lots of local restaurants within walking distance and you can't come to Whitby without sampling their 'Fish and Chips'. The streets of Whitby are quaint and quintessential of an 'Olde Worlde' seaside town. The steps up to the Abbey are worth the effort as views are tremendous. From the Belfry take a walk west along the beach. A good stroll to blow away the cobwebs. It's also worth exploring coves and bays on the coast both east and west from Whitby. Try to make your journey in or out of Whitby via the Yorkshire Dales...it's really worth exploring the Esk Valley and to see the huge skies of the Yorkshire Moors on a sunny day. Our stay was only for a couple of nights but we really wished we could have stayed longer!

Phil and Sophie were wonderful hosts who clearly specialise in the area of hospitality. The rooms were beautiful and the sheets and pillow cases were of a very high standard. The Room was impecably clean, and the food at breakfast was cooked to perfection. We would most certainly stay at The Belfry when we visit again next year without hesitation. Thank you both for a special week end.

Tips:

In the short time we stayed at Whitby, we really did cram as much in as possible. We jumped on the Whitby open top tourist bus which highlighted the areas and buildings of interest. We took a trip down the river in an ex RNLI rescue boat with a very interesting Captain offering all sorts of interesting local facts. We didn't have a bad meal and service was always friendly and professional. We could recommend the Fishermans Wide and Marine for the most exsqusite fish dishes. It is also worth while taking a short walk up the Whitby Lighthouse, it was £1.50 per adult and the views of the Abbey and Church were superb.

Phill and Sophie are the perfect hosts! On arrival we received a warm welcome, an orientation to the B & B, a handy Whitby Guide and a parking permit. Our bedroom was spotlessly clean with very comfortable beds, adequate storage facilities and a superb shower. My only negative comment would be the lack of a dressing table-type mirror to enable someone to sit to do their hair/make-up. The dining room is spacious and the breakfast delicious. The hospitality facilities in the resident's lounge are an added bonus!

Tips:

The Belfry is just a stones throw from the West Prom and an easy walk down to the harbour where there are lots of boats offering short trips and many cafes and restaurants. Whitby is well supplied with benches - ideal for having a rest and doing a bit of 'people watching'.

Sophie and Phil are really nice and welcoming, if you had a problem I am sure it would be rectified promptly, but then I doubt that you would encounter problems at The Belfry. The hotel is very attractive and beautifully decorated inside. Our bedroom (no 1) was spacious and very attractive, with sea view. Sophie and Phill are brilliant and delightful hosts. And the breakfasts are superb, especially the 'specials' (a different one every morning) - don't miss them! We enjoyed our stay immensely and will certainly stay here again on our next visit to Whitby.

Tips:

Don't miss the RNLI shop and museum - not well advertised but well worth a visit to get an insight into the unbelievably brave heroes of Whitby past. If you take a car to visit the Abbey, make sure that the Abbey is open BEFORE you pay for parking (we didn't!). And be sure to visit the extraordinary St Mary's Church next to the Abbey - really fascinating.

There is a lovely cosy lounge for guests which a coffee maker. The Belfry is well situated for walking down into town or along the cliff tops and is very quiet. Some rooms have sea views.

Tips:

Lovely walk on coast path from Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay and back by bus, took 3 hrs on a lovely dry day. There are a lot of steep steps on second half of walk which would be very slippy on a wet day.Good meal at The Magpie as usual but also tried The Granby on Skinner Street and were pleasantly surprised, lovely home cooked food and plenty of it. Our family room was immaculately clean, very spacious and warm with a quality tea/coffee making tray (real milk always available) and toiletries. Even though the weather wasn't up to much, it made all the difference coming back to a warm homely place after walking around in the the cold for hours. Me and my partner spent 2 nights at the Belfry, We were greeted by the friendly owner Phill who was really helpful and offered to carry our bags. The room was clean, well decorated. A huge selection of fancy teas and coffees, fresh milk and bottled water.we were told if we wanted any extras just ask. The bed was very comfy great fluffy pillows we both slept well. we couldnt fault the room.Even had a hairdryer The breakfast was brilliant Sophie cooked a marvelous vegetarian breakfast and what seemed like unlimited toast and tea. The second morning Christian had the special Mexican eggs which he said were delicious. We got a parking permit for outside. Phill gave us some great advice on local places. Over all our trip was brilliant we both said we cant wait to book for next year.

Tips:

we both loved the Abbey unfortunatly due to the time of year it was closed that didnt stop us having a good time, We had great walks down on the beach and pier. The scenery was stunning got a few great pictures. We were advised to visit Robin Hoods bay which was a great work out through the hilly but pretty streets. Not that you can miss them but loved seeing the seagulls there HUGE and very entertaining.

We had Room 5 which was lovely with sea views.

Tips:

Estbek house at Sandsend two miles along the road is amazing for a fabulous meal for a special occasion. We also recommend Magpie the award winning fish and chip restaurant, always advisable to book.

19th October 2015:

No faults to find. Phill and Sophie are very friendly and hospitable young hosts. The facilities are top class and the breakfasts are well cooked and certainly comprehensive in terms of choices on offer. In particular the bed was warm & comfortable and the shower was very good - two areas where I find guest houses can fall down. Wi-fi was also good.

Tips:

If you're in town for any of the many events which take place in the Pavilion and Pavilion Theatre you can't get much closer for a short totter back to your digs. Aside from that, West Cliff is the place to be located in Whitby for beach, superb views, shops, pubs, cafes and all the things we like to do on holiday.

From start to finish, our stay at the Belfry Whitby with Phill and Sophie couldn't have been better. This couple are naturals at being innkeepers and they have a perfect spot to offer visitors. The inn is within walking distance of the town centre and the Abbey. Sophie suggested the very restaurant / food that we'd been craving. Our room was immaculate and very comfortable. Everything was sparkling and efficient. Breakfast was delicious--with homemade pancakes in addition to the usual English breakfast. Delightful place.

Tips:

Kam Ti Thai Restaurant in the--believe it or not--Whitby Train Station. Surprisingly elegant! Excellent food.

Phill and Sophie deserve enormous credit for the way they run The Belfry. Nothing is too much trouble and they make a big effort to make your stay perfect. Breakfast is superb which sometimes include specials such as eggs Benedict. A Parking permit for your stay is included which is good as parking in Whitby can be frustrating at times. We are happy to recommend The Belfry.

A real "home from home" place to stay. Phil and Sophie are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast is as good as any 5-star hotel, as are the comfortable Kingsize bed, and roomy shower. Digital TV with all channels and Internet access available. The only thing to note for other guests is that this would not be suitable for anyone with mobility limitations. There are steep stairs to reach guest bedrooms. In room 2, the toilet seat is low - as most modern ones are ! You will need to ask for a parking permit from the owners - we had no problem finding a space nearby, but this may not be the case in Summer months.

Tips:

Lots of excellent eateries and shops in Whitby. A thriving town; always something happening. We visited Nunnington Hall (NT) and were astonished by the amazing Carlisle Collection of dolls house rooms, and art exhibition. Sandsend is also just a stone's throw away, with a clean beach and dogs allowed to play after the end of September.

Fantastic location, lovely staff/owners, great breakfasts, beautiful building. Two tiny niggles...curtains in Room 5 need hanging properly on curtain rings, and please watch marks on wall behind beds, otherwise a perfect room with a lovely sea view!!! Oh and check the fan in the bathroom, the condensation might be problematic in winter!! We WILL be back...are you open in January?? Kind regards - Jane Howells from Catcliffe on the Water!!!!

Tips:

Walk to Sandsend via beach/footpath (3.5 miles) at low tide, back by road/footpath or bus. 2 Lovely beachside cafes and cute shops across the bridge.

Phill and Sophie looked after us so well. The Kingsize bedroom and adjacent bathroom (sole use only)were spotlessly clean.Bed very comfortable and a lovely sea-view. Plenty of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and biscuits available in the room. Nice touch of a small bottle of fresh milk on the 1st day!Very good breakfast to start the day with plenty of tea/coffee and toast. The full English was wonderful.Note this room is lovely but is at the top of the building so is not suitable for everyone if they cannot manage many stairs. We loved it and wouldn't hesitate to go back if we visit Whitby again

Tips:

We ate at a small Italian restaurant called Moutreys whilst we were there. We both had the minced steak burger one from the special board. They were both very good and tasty and plenty of it.The menu has so much more. Would go back to try more from the menu. Loved Goathland, small village with shops, tea rooms and a pub. Beautiful scenery for a walk and the railway station part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Staithes worth a visit. Charming small bay with old cottages.

Phil & Sophie were the perfect hosts. They were warm and friendly, and by the time we left they seemed like friends that we had known for years. The breakfasts were excellent. We would highly recommend The Belfry, and will stay there again if we return to Whitby.

Tips:

Places we would recommend :- Quayside - Excellent fish & chips, but they do push you to get out as soon as you've eaten. Trenchers - Busy restaurant serving very good food. Fish & chips seemed to have more crispy batter than Quayside, but salads etc excellent. Abbey Wharf - Excelent steak. Bagdale House Hotel - A bit more of a quieter atmosphere, ideal for a more romantic occasion. All of these restaurants had very efficient & friendly staff.

Lovely, modern and comfortable accomodation with a very high standard of cleanliness. Great view from the room we had. The bed was enormous and extremely comfortable. The only reason we were able to get out of it in the mornings was to go down to the best breakfasts we have ever had. Phil & Sophie were very welcoming and friendly. We really do not have anything bad to say at all.

Tips:

Fish & chips in Whitby is a must! We went to the Fisherman's Wife which was recommended by Phil and we had a delicious dinner whilst enjoying great sea views. Lots of great places to eat a wide variety of foods. And you can then walk it all off by climbing the 199 steps up to the Abbey!

Lovely enjoyable stay, the Belfry was immaculate throughout and hosts were lovely and helpfull and the breakfast didn't dissapoint either . Definatly will return !

Tips:

The yellow open top bus sets of from whale bones not far from Belfry every half hour it takes you all around Whitby even upto abbey .Its £5 but you can get on off whenever you like and can be used as many times as you like , kids under 5 travel free . Fresh clean place, whilst still maintaining a character feel. Excellent friendly hosts, couldn't have been more helpful. Comfortable beds, nice bedding. Fully stocked hospitality tray, toiletries nicer than other establishments we have been in. All these lovely little things add up. Breakfasts were excellent, and loved that you had a different daily breakfast special. Would definately recommend without a doubt.

Tips:

If staying in summer season book at least a day before at most restaurants, as they get full. The Abbey wharf, just over the bridge seemed to have a few spare tables for walk in customers though. Less than 15 minutes drive away is Falling Foss tea gardens - highly recommend this enchanting place. Car park is there, but there is a lovely walk through the woods, and you will come across 'The Hermitage' a cave carved out of rock. On a previous visit we also enjoyed Rydale Folk Museum, with houses set up for different periods.

Phil is a Master at the art of hospitality!! Loved the little touches around the places like bottles of milk and individual pots of ketchup at breakfast. Others could learn a lot from you two. Curtains in bedroom did not quite shut (not a problem for us but some may not like it). Maybe offer a non slip mat for inside shower for those that want it (again not a problem for us but some older guests may prefer it).

Ask Phil as he is a mine of information. Did not enjoy Quayside or Long Kings restaurants. Did enjoy The Fisherman's Wife restaurant.
