Best place to stay in Whitby.Linda is warm and welcoming, going the extra mile to make sure you're happy. Our room was clean and the facilities excellent. I have a dairy allergy but it was no trouble for Linda to get me a spread for my morning toast. Breakfast was excellent using local produce. Saying highly recommend doesn't cut it, stay and see for yourself just how good this place is.
Tips:The Vault was an excellent restaurant. The Fisherman's wife best for fish and chips with a view.

Linda gave us a lovely welcome. Her attention to detail gave us everything we could have wanted. A very comfortable room and sofa in the dining room available too. Wonderful cooked breakfasts using local produce from the butcher down the road.EV charger available was an added bonus.
Tips:A good base for walking into Whitby - about 15/20 minutes- avoiding the need to find a place to park! Whitby Abbey, Whitby Jet shops, cobbled Streets, excellent art gallery and museum in Pannetts Park and of course the sea and sand! Lots of places to eat including local fish and chips.

Lovely place to stay. Beautifully decorated. Nice comfortable beds. Everything is spotless. Linda is very accommodating. Nice extra touches, like fresh fruit and bottles of water to help yourself to. Lots of information of places to walk and visit
Tips:Had a couple of good meals at local pubs. Hare and hounds in Hawkster. Didn't look thrilling from the outside, but inside was nice. Excellent food and lovely staff. Tried Trenches restaurant for fish and chips. Everyone else had been to The magpie, but this was definitely better. Lovely surroundings, quick service Top class food

We had a wonderful stay. Linda makes you very welcome and happily answers any questions about Whitby and surrounding areas. The house has lots of original features very well decorated and spotless. Our room which was the twin bedded was very comfortable and spacious with en suite. Breakfast was available at a time to suit beautifully cooked and good produce. Parking for our car was on their drive. We would definitely recommend this B&B.
Tips:We loved Royal Fisheries for freshly cooked fish & chips. Mary’s at Sandsend for sandwiches. Clara at West Cliff in Whitby for coffee, ice cream. Robin Hoods Bay but go early morning before crowds.

Nothing but positive things to say ! Started with our arrival at the property 30-60 minutes before our agreed time, but Linda was superb, allowing us to take our room & even getting Dave to move his van to allow us to park on front of the house. The room was exceptionally clean & comfortable & the following morning, we enjoyed a lovely, leisurely breakfast, before our departure. Linda is a fabulous landlady, devoting a lot of time to her guests. Whilst we didn't need a lot of local knowledge, she was able to guide us through the local estate to cut some time off the journey into Whitby. We live in York, so don't often stay in Whitby overnight, but if we do, The Coal Merchant's House will be our preferred choice !
Tips:Ask Linda about the "short cut " to Whitby centre via The Cinder Track

The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. They had thought of lots of little details which made it a great place to come back to after a long day, such as access to milk, water and fruit at any time in the dining room and a full range of herbal teas as well. This is a comfortable place to stay especially if you enjoy Whitby but want to have a restful sleep after a hectic and crowded day!
Tips:Abbey Wharf may not have a great supply of food for vegetarians, my family were really pleased with the meat and fish options they had. The staff were friendly and the service was quick. Goathland is a good place to visit nearby if you are keen walkers who want to get onto the moors easily but also want to be close to tea shops!

Linda is a superb host, graciously providing breakfast much earlier than usual to fit in with my need to commute for work. Breakfast itself was fantastic, excellent local bacon and sausages, a great selection of fresh fruit, cereals, toast fresh coffee etc. I particularly appreciated the fire too! The house is great to look at, the room very comfortable and the shower powerful and hot! Absolutely nothing not to like.
Tips:It’s very easy to walk into Ruswarp and visit the Bridge pub, good food and selection of beers, well situated by the river Esk. Whitby is also only 15 minutes walk and is an absolutely fascinating town to explore. Moutrey’s an Italian restaurant is highly recommended, fantastic food! 27th February 2024:
Our stay at The Coal Merchant was just for the 1 night and we wish it had been for longer. Such a lovely warm and welcoming place to stay. Our room was so comfortable and beautifully decorated as was the whole of the house. In the room there is a kettle with Yorkshire tea (the best tea ever) coffee, hot chocolate and the best biscuits. Outside the rooms there is access to clean cups and extra tea and coffee, which I thought was a great touch. Fresh milk and bottled water was in a fridge in the breakfast room which again another great touch. The bathroom was well thought out with shampoo and conditioner and even had a cloth to take off your make up! The icing on the cake for us was breakfast - open fire (we stayed in February) so was so warming and a lovely setting for breakfast. The choice of breakfast is so diverse. You can eat as light as you like with a choice of cereals/ fruit and yoghurts / granola / porridge and a full English with produce from the local butcher. I cannot wait to come back to the Coal Merchant and would have loved to hv booked in March but not available 🥲. I have to say also the position of The Coal House is great too. Perfect for access into Whitby or Sands end in a taxi for just around £6 or if driving you have a base to explore the whole of the local coastline. Linda is the most perfect host and we just want to say again. Thank you 🙏

Linda was a fabulous host, full of great information. She looked after our dietary requirements and served up a lovely, substantial breakfast. The room was lovely and bright facing over the moors. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage. Bathroom was spotless with a great powerful shower. Parking at the front of the property on the driveway is an additional bonus which was why we chose this B&B as opposed to Whitby town centre where parking can be difficult.
Tips:The position of the property is great as there's at least 4 routes into Whitby centre. We walked all of them, via Ruswarp village and along by the railway line which leads to the harbour. There was also a route towards the west Cliffe side of the town which enabled us to reach the beach and we walked to Sandsend. Be careful of the tide. There was also another route that Linda told us about which is the quickest and it's past the shell garage at the roundabout and past a stone wall and then go down the steps and follow the path between the houses. This leads down to the cinder path and you are right in the town. We visited the abbey which is a must and there's the Whitby brewery next door. We walked back from Sandsend via the road and it lead us to the pavillion and that's where captain cook's statue can be found next to the whalebone arch. We ate at the Angel Fisheries, the Humble pie shop and had drinks in the Arch and Abbey, Elsinor, Middle Earth tavern, the black swan and the pier. There's also a captain cook museum which was closed at this time of year and loads of boat trips and ghost walks when they are open.

Linda is the most delightful host. Couldn't be more helpful. Everything super excellent in this location. Quiet, spotless, most interesting historic venue apart from all the surrounding Whitby history. Excellent breakfast selection with locally made produce. Highly recommended.
Tips:The Magpie Restaurant. Fish and Chips a speciality but other excellent choice. Sneaton Castle a must for a very special historic venue and remarkable meal. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is a must for maritime exploration history. Spectular views of the harbour. Difficult to overstate the atmosphere of the harbour. For art and history lovers The Pannett Art Gallery and Whitby Museums are 'musts' The Soper Collection and the other collections are very special indeed and inspirational, The Soper Collection particularly so in terms of art, wildlife, history and conservation.

We always have a great welcome by Linda and are looked after to a high standard. The rooms are very pleasant and comfortable. The breakfasts are very good and filling and there is a great choice to cater for everyone whatever their tastes. All in all is a brilliant place to base oneself within striking distance of Whitby and other coastal towns and is also near the beautiful North Yorkshire moors.
Tips:A fantastic garden centre, model railway line , boating on the near by river and of course Whitby is 5 minutes away. Try Sneaton Castle restaurant with its fantastic menu , great food. The fish and chip shop/ restaurant in Sleights is worth a visit. Take a trip on the North York moors railway a must for all steam train enthusiasts. We very much enjoyed our 2 nights at The Coal Merchant’s House. Linda looked after us very well and provided a delicious breakfast each morning. She also provided safe storage for our bicycles as we had cycled up the Cinder Track from Scarborough. Our room was small but very clean and provided us with a base to explore Whitby and the surrounding area.
Tips:If you’re keen on cycling, the Cinder Track is a must. It’s a bit rough in places but that’s not a problem for a decent off road bike. Access to the track from our accommodation was very easy. On day 2 we took the bus to Runswick Bay and enjoyed the coastal walk back to Whitby.

Little hidden gem. thank you for our lovely stay.
Tips:Lots of things to do,199 steps, The Abby or follow the path around to the brewery (tours only Tue/Thur get a drink), find the wire sculptures scattered around, lovely walks, busses seemed to be very frequent to Scarborough and other places, lots of querky streets with shops and places to eat(may need to book in advance, lots of pubs and micro breweries.

We received a very warm welcome from Linda who runs a lovely guest house situated on the outskirts of Whitby. The town is about a mile away but easily accessible by a nice pathway located a few minutes walk from the guest house. The room was very clean, comfortable and tastefully presented as was the en-suite. The breakfast selection, all good quality ingredients, was delicious. We would have no hesitation in staying here again and would recommend to friends and family. The reason I gave 4 for facilities is due to the smaller double bed size in that particular room although it was very comfortable with good quality bedding. There are other rooms. Thank you Linda.
Tips:Trenchers is our favourite fish and chip restaurant and Bothams tea room, the one situated closer to Captain Cook’s statue, brings a little nostalgia from bygone days.

Greeted by the lovely host on arrival. The room was clean and comfortable. Loved having fresh milk for our coffees and access to bottles of water; really nice touch. The breakfast was amazing, with locally sourced produced. We would definitely stay again.
Tips:We ate in the evening at The Trenchers, near the train station. They only take bookings for parties of 7 or more; so there is a queue waiting to get in most of the time. We went at 6.30 pm and waited 10 mins.although it was busy , we never felt like we being rushed. The food and service were superb. Taxi fare into town was £6/£7

It was a real pleasure to meet our hostess, Linda, who provides such a high level of care for her guests. We were met every morning with a cheerful greeting and an outstanding breakfast. All rooms are spotlessly clean, comfortable and well-appointed.
Tips:I can't recommend this guest house more highly. By foot it is about 20 minutes walk into town on the shortest route. However, there is a longer walk into town that runs alongside the river and railway which is really pleasant if the weather is good. This walk takes about 1 hour but you often get the bonus of seeing steam trains running on the track.

Tips:The house is roughly a mile ( maybe slightly less )from the town centre. The walk is downhill and can be done by an off road footpath. We found the walk easy and quick but you could get a taxi if required. There is a spar shop nearby, but Whitby has everything you would require. Had a super 4 night stay at this wonderful B&B where Linda the host looked after our every need. Our room was lovely, with a good size bedroom and excellent bathroom with bath and shower. Complimentary toiletries were provided as well as as much tea and coffee as you could drink. Breakfast was plentiful with a cooked to order english breakfast, along with fruits, yogurts, cereal and toast as you wish. The B&B is situation approx a 20 min walk in to town and there are various ways to go to change your route each day. I would highly recommend staying here.
Tips:Most of the places to eat are in Whitby, and there is something for everyone in the town. There is a pub approx. a 10 min walk away and it's ok. A must see is the Abbey in Whitby and a walk to Robin Hoods bay approx 8 miles away. Linda was a lovely lady, she couldn’t have been more helpful or accommodating. She was willing to help in any way. The rooms were very nice & clean. They had just decorated the main bedroom it was beautiful, the bed was also very comfortable in fact we couldn’t find a thing wrong,, we would give Linda 10 out of 10
Tips:As we were there for wedding we didn’t see much else. But we ate at the famous fish restaurant the Magpie café on the Friday night they accommodated 7 of us it was absolutely fabulous

Excellent hostess (Linda), friendly and gives good tips for walks, where to eat. We were in the king-size room. Good ensuite facilities. Very nice cooked breakfast. Bottles of water and fruit for you if wanted. Kettle in room with good choice of tea/coffee and biscuits. Will be my first choice to stay at if in the area again. About 15min walk into Whitby, longer coming back as uphill.
Tips:We did a couple of circular walks to 'Falling Foss and Mallyan Spout', good footwear needed. Tearoom above Falling Foss, bit of a scramble to get near Mallyan Spout. We were there for half-term week, very busy. Would recommend booking restaurants well in advance of your stay, as many are only open 3 or 4 nights a week (due to staffing issues) and all were booked up, so we struggled getting a table.

Tea, coffee, yummy local biscuits, milk and bottled water available in a fridge. Breakfast cooked to order

The Coal Merchant’s House is a fabulous place to stay. We could not have felt more welcome. The breakfast choice and standard was excellent. Linda was so helpful - a shorter and more scenic walk into Whitby, where to park, other beautiful places to visit in the area. Our room was perfect - beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean. Can highly recommend staying at The Coal Merchant’s House and the reason we chose it was based on other excellent reviews. Also excellent email communication from Linda prior to our visit.
Tips:Whitby has fabulous places to eat! It’s also a lovely town. Staithes is beautiful as is Robin Hood’s Bay! Goathland is where Heart Beat was filmed. Pickering and Thornton le Dale are lovely places to walk. The steam railway and station at Pickering are well worth a visit and train ride. North Yorkshire really is a beautiful part of Britain!

Stayed for the weekend at the Coal Merchants and couldn’t have been happier. Greeted by our friendly host Linda on arrival, room was clean and had drinks and top ups available, also bottled water & fresh fruit available. Every thing looked new in our room. Great choice at breakfast and cooked breakfast especially good. Hosts always available if required. Would definitely recommend.
Tips:Linda, the host has plenty of local knowledge and the restaurants we visited were very good. CM house is situated about one mile from the town, but town is easily accessible by either foot or local bus. There is parking at the house. Tips:Whitby Abbey is very interesting. Robin Hoods Bay is beautiful as is Rutland Bay. One complaint about the whole area is car parking charges. Everywhere you go you have to pay for parking and the parking metres are so complicated it's unbelievable.

Tips:The B&B is 1.3 miles from the centre of Whitby. We enjoyed the daily walks but it may be a problem if you were not very mobile. Although the taxi services are very good and there is a bus stop close by. We had a day rider for £8.50 on the X4 bus route to which took us to Sandsend, Saltburn and Staithes. There was also another bus route taking in Robin Hood Bay and Scarborough which we didn't have time to try. Would recommend Four Seasons Restaurant and Magpie Cafe for meals

Even letting us use your iPad to order our takeaway & then bringing plates, cutlery & wine glasses. The house was exceptionally clean & your breakfasts were amazing. Will definitely be back
Tips:There is lots of walking to do around here. For a less strenuous walk try the cinder path. We ate at the White House Inn, little more expensive but well worth it. For a takeaway pizza try Gino’s

We had a 4-night stay at this wonderful place. It is newly opened (April 2019) and our hostess Linda has created a lovely B&B establishment. The room was beautifully appointed and very clean and comfortable. Nice big telly with Netflix available. Breakfast was excellent, with choices for most tastes and dietary requirements and a nice welcoming open fire in the breakfast room. The Coal Merchants House has its own car parking and is situated on Ruswarp Lane, about a mile outside of Whitby town centre. There are three lovely walks to get you into town, either by the railway line or the cinder track. If the weather is inclement, a taxi will cost £5 or there are local buses.
